TrapSnap

Installation

Choice of Host.
The host PC or Unix server you install TrapSnap on is the IP destination for SNMP Traps from SNMP devices.
These SNMP devices will generate traps that you want TrapSnap to use.
They could include sensor hubs, sensor probes or any other SNMP trap generator.

Installing TrapSnap on your Windows PC.
TrapSnap is installed from a single executable (TrapSnap-Install.exe).
On the PC where you want TrapSnap to be installed, run this executable (double click it).
You will be asked where TrapSnap should be installed.
By default, TrapSnap will be installed as a system service so that it will be ready to listen
for traps as soon as windows is running. You do not need to login for TrapSnap to work.
You will be asked to activate a licence for TrapSnap, which you MUST do even if this is
only for a trial.
Now see "Completing the Installation" below.

Installing TrapSnap on your Unix host.
If you have downloaded TrapSnap and the file is called TrapSnap-???.tar.gz you will need
to unzip TrapSnap and then untar it:

#> gunzip TrapSnap-???.tar.gz
#> tar -xvf TrapSnap-???.tar

You now have a directory 'NETic' that contains TrapSnap ready to be installed. If you have received TrapSnap on CD then mount the CD and change to TrapSnap directory.

#> ./setup

You will be asked to activate a licence for TrapSnap, which you MUST do even if this is
only for a trial.

Completing the Installation.
After TrapSnap installs, it performs some simple tests to check that it can listen for traps.
If some other application is already listening for traps then TrapSnap will not be able to work.
You will either need to install TrapSnap on another machine or
stop the conflicting application from running.

Finally, you will need to edit the supplied configuration example to suit your environment.

Find out about the layout of TrapSnap.cfg in "Editing TrapSnap.cfg".
